100 Year Old School Destroyed

BURKE COUNTY, NC– A 100-year-old schoolhouse in Burke County was destroyed after a massive fire. Tonight, fire crews still don’t know what caused the flames.

Close to 100 firefighters from 20 different departments were called out to the Old Hildebran High School on Center Street this morning.

The school is located right behind the Hildebran Town Hall.

Firefighters were able to keep the flames from spreading, but the school is a total loss.

Hildebran resident Holly Dennie says, “They wanted to tear it down, then the town people started a petition to try and save the building because its part of everyone’s heritage, and then this happens.”

No injuries were reported in the fire. Some residents say they are concerned because the building was filled with asbestos.
