Charlotte Gets Ready For CIAA Week

CHARLOTTE, NC– It’s that time of year again! CIAA Tournament games get underway Tuesday at Time Warner Cable Arena. The event brings thousands of fans to Charlotte. It’s one of the city’s biggest money makers.

Fan Fest starts Thursday at the Convention Center and events in Uptown run through Saturday. Police say be prepared for large crowds and lots of traffic.

City and tournament leaders expect a very busy weekend.

CIAA Commissioner Jacqie McWilliams says,  “24 teams here that are excited to get on the floor and play the game they love most.”

Tom Murray of the Charlotte Regional Visitors Authority says, “This is the single biggest annual event that Charlotte hosts every year. Last year’s economic impact was 55.6 million dollars.”

Deputy Chief Jeff Estes of the CMPD says, “We wanna remind people to make sure they consume alcohol responsibly, make sure if they see something suspicious, they say something to us.”

CMPD will have extra officers keeping a close eye on CIAA parties. Two people were shot last year at a non-sanctioned event at Label in the Music Factory.
