Union County Schools’ Superintendent Announces Retirement

MONROE, N.C. — Union County Public Schools’ Superintendent Dr. Mary B. Ellis has announced her plan to retire on June 1, 2016.

mary ellisDr. Ellis has been the UCPS superintendent since 2012, and has been in education for over 35 years.  A Union County native, Dr. Ellis began teaching at Sun Valley Middle school and taught middle and high school English for nearly two decades before moving in to administration in 1997.

“It has been an honor to serve as Superintendent of Union County Public Schools,” Ellis said. “This is an outstanding school system and I am proud to say that I was educated in Union County and have worked as a teacher and administrative leader in this district.”

As superintendent, Dr. Ellis strengthened the Union County school district and garnered numerous accolades on the local, regional, and national levels. The district’s graduation rate is 93.1 percent, which is the highest in the school system’s history.

Dr. Ellis was recently the subject of an investigation by the State Bureau of Investigation regarding conflict of interest laws, but was cleared of any wrongdoing.
