Charlotte, N.C. — Health officials are investigating elevated levels of chemical contaminants in Little Sugar Creek in Charlotte.

Results from testing performed by Charlotte-Mecklenburg Storm Water Services have revealed elevated levels of trichloroethylene (TCE) and perchloroethylene (PCE) in Little Sugar Creek between East 36th Street and Parkwood Avenue, and elevated levels of PCE in a tributary to Little Sugar Creek located at the intersection of East 27th and North Davidson Streets.
TCE and PCE are colorless, nonflammable liquids that are used in a variety of commercial and industrial processes. These chemicals may cause cancer through multiple routes of exposure, including inhalation and ingestion.
The source of the contamination in Little Sugar Creek is currently under investigation. Officials advise against drinking, fishing, or bathing in the creek.
