As of December 1st, North Carolina requires applicants for a pistol purchase or concealed carry weapon permits to authorize the disclosure of any records concerning his/her mental health capacity.

Officials have seen an exponential increase in the number of record requests. Prior to this change in the law, the staff processed an average of 136 requests each month. There were 2,456 requests in January alone.

“Our office has mobilized all available resources to address the explosive demand,” says Elisa Chinn-Gary, Mecklenburg County Clerk of Superior Court. “However, those resources alone are insufficient to prevent delays. Our current wait time is four months.”

Applicants can get more details about the records process by calling (704) 686-0427.
