CMS Releases The Results of Student Assignment Surveys

CHARLOTTE, NC– It was an avalanche of information for Charlotte-Mecklenburg school board members, and the thousands of parents invested in the future of student assignment for the district.

The results of the student assignment community survey are in, released today in a 241 page document.
There were more than 27,000 responses to a district online survey.

80-percent of parents ranked a school’s leadership, the teachers and principal, as extremely important.

75-percent says it’s a school’s environment, safety and behavioral issues.

67-percent tabbed location, proximity to home, as extremely important.

The results of the survey, which closed two weeks ago, were presented to the c-m-s board policy committee tonight.

That committee is trying to align current student assignment goals with guiding principles for student assignment that were set in 20-10.

Home schools has been the hot-button topic for parents during the current process.

Tonight the committee emphasized those home schools as the top priority for student assignment, while highlighting the need to ensure all schools are seen as a viable educational choices for students.

Boe Clark, a Ballantyne resident said “To ensure that kids are able to attend schools in their home neighborhood, that’s first and foremost, which we’re encouraging the board to come out and make that statement clear.”

The CMS Board is working to have a new student assignment plan in place for the 2017-18 school year.
