Mary Ann Carter

STANLEY, N.C. – A Lincoln County mother is charged with felony child abuse after multiple injuries to her 14-month-old son.

The Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office arrested 43-year-old Mary Ann Carter of Stanley after they say an investigation shows her toddler son had bruises, a fractured right leg, fractured skull and brain bleed.

On March 15th, Dept. of Social Services case workers contacted detectives about an anonymous tip they received that the little boy’s leg was injured. X-rays confirmed the child had a fractured leg. Detectives began investigating and say they discovered the child had additional bruises and head injuries.  The child was taken to Levine’s Children Center in Charlotte where doctors say they found the child had a fractured skull and brain bleed.

On April 1st, Carter was arrested and charged with one felony count of Child Abuse with Serious Injury. She is being held under a $100,000 secured bond. She is scheduled for a first appearance in Lincoln Co. District Court on Monday, April 4.

The child has been released from the hospital and is currently with foster parents in Lincoln County.
