Union County Woman Charged with String of Arsons and Thefts
UNION CO., NC– The crime span began over a year ago. Neighbors tell us they are shocked but not surprised after learning one of their own admitted to a string of arsonists and thefts.
Mark Honeycutt lives across the street from this mobile home park on Ken Ryan Drive and recalls several incidents where he smelled smoke and saw fire.
“Over the last year it’s been 4 or 5 times, yep it’s been multiple times,” says Honeycutt.
Friday, detectives arrested 49 Year-old Kimberly Cox.
Detectives say Cox admitted that on March 27th , she set her next door neighbors home on fire, and then broke into the home the next day.
Honeycutt describes the night of that fire.
“Other Sunday night, like fire trucks, 7 or 8 emergency personnel at like 1 o’clock in the morning,” says Honeycutt.
Detectives say that wasn’t the first time her neighbor had problems.
On March 26th of last year, the same homeowners car was set on fire and around July 4th, of last year the same home was broken into. Money and prescription drugs were stolen.
Detectives questioned Cox last Monday. Later that night, another fire was set at a home on Duncan road and a different vehicle on Ken Ryan Drive was set on fire.
Detectives say Cox admitted to them she started the fires and stole cash and prescription drugs.
They are still looking into a series of dumpster fires and property crimes that occurred in the same mobile home park since 2014.
But no one has been charged in those crimes.
For now, neighbors we talked to say they are still shocked it happened at all.
“That’s crazy! I would’ve never thought this would happen over there. It’s really a quiet trailer park you never hear nothing out of them,” says Honeycutt.
Cox is currently at the Union County jail.
