West Charlotte HS Band Director Arrested

CHARLOTTE, NC– “That is horrific, oh God I did not know that,” said parent, Shauna Allen.

Parents picking up their kids from West Charlotte High School hadn’t heard the news until we told them. Sunday in between church services at Friendship Missionary Baptist Church, police arrested 58 year old Duncan Gray, the band director at West Charlotte High School for nearly 10 years. A former student says Gray sexually assaulted him at the school starting when he was 13 and says it lasted for four years. Police are trying to determine whether there are any other possible victims.

“Now is the time if you have any information, such as witnessing or potential victim, if you have information related to this case please come forward and reach out to us,” said Lt. Tom Barry with CMPD’s Special Victims Unit.

WCCB Charlotte found out Gray wasn’t just a member at Friendship Missionary Baptist Church, he worked part-time as a Worship Secretary on Sunday.

I spoke with a church administrator who didn’t want to go on camera but says Gray did not work with children however his duties at the church were suspended immediately following his arrest.

WCCB Charlotte also learned that CMS put Gray on administrative leave for 18 days in March of 2011. The district won’t say what for, which parents say makes them wonder.

“You don’t know who else this might have happened to, this might have happened to someone else they just haven’t came forward, ” said parent, Linda Kane.

Parents say they hope he’s never working back in a school again.
