Carolinas’ Kickin’ It Challenge

2016 Event Scheduled for May 6-8 Benefiting Komen Charlotte and Carolinas HealthCare System’s Levine Cancer Institute

Kickin It ballRock Hill — The Carolinas’ Kickin’ It Challenge enters its third year in Rock Hill well on the way to surpassing its 2015 fundraising total of more than $76,700 for Komen Charlotte and Carolina HealthCare System’s Levine Cancer Institute.

The signature club level soccer tournament, as well as a kickoff party and silent auction in Fort Mill, are focused entirely on raising money for the fight against breast cancer. All proceeds from the 2016 event, scheduled for the weekend of May 6-8, will fund patient programs in York and Mecklenburg County and national cancer research programs.

The Kickin’ It events have raised more than $140,000 in two years.

Working with Discoveries Soccer Club in Rock Hill and our sponsors, we are also creating a range of events around the tournament at the Manchester Meadows complex in Rock Hill that will stress women’s wellness. The tournament is expected to draw more than 80 club teams from across the Southeast.

The kickoff party at the Anne Springs Close Dairy Barn Fort Mill features a dinner, silent auction and entertainment by Charlotte-based country rock band Early Ray. Matt Harris, half of 107.9 The Link’s The Matt and Ramona Show, will emcee the auction and concert.

Presenting sponsors for the kickoff party are Fortune 500 steelmaker Nucor Corp. and Carolina Golf Cars. Other key sponsors are Fidelity Investments, Padgett Business Services, Family Trust Federal Credit Union, 107.9 The Link, Dicks Sporting Goods, Williams & Fudge, Media Cake Social and Harris Teeter.

The two-day soccer tournament kicks off May 7, sponsored by Premier Soccer, 107.9 the Link, Harris Teeter, Dick’s Sporting Goods and Discoveries Soccer Club.

The inspiration for The Carolinas Kickin’ It Challenge is Debbie S. Whitener, Shana Shivel’s mother, who lost her battle with breast cancer in 2008. Shana wanted to honor her mother — and to help others who are still fighting the disease. Fort Mill residents Shana Shivel and Dr. Sarah Morris are the event co-founders; both have children playing in the Discoveries club. They were named CN2 Hometown Heroes in 2014 for their efforts to launch the Kickin’ It Challenge.
