CMPD: Suspect in custody in deadly hit and run

UPDATE:

The driver involved in the deadly hit and run that killed a 6-year-old boy on Sunday, April 24, has turned himself in, Charlotte-Mecklenburg police say.

CMPD is working to extradite Juan Antonio Quintanilla-Garza from the Webb County Sheriff’s Office in Texas.

Police say the timetable for Quintanilla-Garza’s is not set.

The driver involved in a fatal hit and run Tuesday afternoon that killed a 6-year-old boy has been identified as 32-year-old Juan Antonio Quintanilla-Garza.Juan Antonio Quintanilla-Garza

Police say a warrant for Felony Hit and Run has been issued on Quintanilla-Garza. Detectives have been in touch with him but he is believed to be out of state at this time.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Police have located the van involved in a fatal hit and run on Sunday.

On Tuesday afternoon, police received a tip that a vehicle matching the description of the van was located in the 9800 block of Idlewild Road. Detectives responded to the scene and confirmed that it was the suspect vehicle.

The van is currently being towed to police headquarters where it will be processed by Crime Scene technicians.

The incident occurred in the 1300 block of Eastway Drive. Witnesses say the van stopped and the driver exited, then entered the van and drove off. He was described as a Hispanic male in his mid-30’s with curly black hair, wearing a blue shirt and blue jeans.

The victim was transported Carolinas Medical Center and was pronounced at 1:02 p.m. as a result of the injuries he sustained.
