Mecklenburg County’s Health Director has proposed a zoning law to commissioners that would keep fast food restaurants from building near new schools.

Doctor Marcus Plescia says he knows it’s an aggressive approach, but says childhood obesity is one of the top five health problems in the county.

He says the county’s obesity rate was nearly 60 percent in 20-15. Local leaders and parents are split on his idea.

Should the government be responsible for keeping students healthy?
