Rock Hill Firefighters Save Man From Fire

ROCK HILL, SC– “We were told he was wheelchair bound and he was on the second floor,” said Rock Hill firefighter, Don Roddey.

Rock Hill firefighters Chad Doster and Don Roddey were on duty Wednesday night when the 911 call came in, a man was trapped in this burning home. Video captured by a neighbor shows the flames fire crews had to deal with to get to the man upstairs.

“He was screaming and yelling just to let us know where he was,” said Roddey.

The two of them along with a third firefighter climbed the ladder and found him.

“They actually pulled him out of the window and I stepped up to the top of the ladder and assisted them getting him out and over the ladder and down the ladder,” said firefighter, Chad Doster.

Something neither of these heros ever had to do, but say were so thankful for their training.

“As a whole department itself we go out and do training and some of these things, you sit here and Oh I’ll never do this things, but unfortunately things like this happen,” said Doster.

And they’re a matter of life and death.

“It makes me smile because when I first got there, the guy, when I laid eyes on him he actually had his head poked out of the window trying to get fresh air,” said Doster.

Roddey says the emotions are still very raw, once the adrenline wore off, he got home and processed what happened.

“It’s been such a short time since it happened you kinda sit back and think about it and you just want to come home at the end of the night,” said Roddey.
