Dragging Fanny: Lancaster Co. Under Fire

Residents Want Answers, Action for County Animal Shelter

LANCASTER, S.C. – Animals at risk and not enough answers. Those were the complaints from the people who showed up to speak at Monday night’s Lancaster County Council meeting.

They want more transparency when it comes to what is going on at the county-run animal shelter. It was essentially shut down earlier this month after a shelter employee was put on paid leave. The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) is now investigating what we are told are criminal complaints against that employee.

Lancaster resident Mary Reimers told the council, “Close to 10 years, I’ve been coming up here and asking for improvements to that shelter. It’s being ignored. The answer is: ‘it’s not in the budget, we have no money.’ You had the money for this building when you wanted it. There’s money for the Justice Center when you wanted it. There’s money for trips to Hilton Head and Myrtle Beach when you want it. When the county wants something, they can get it. This has gone on far enough! The county is dragging its fanny on this.”

SLED’s investigation is evidently ongoing, the agency hasn’t replied to WCCB Charlotte’s inquiry. Under state law, the county has seven days left to respond to our open records request.
