VIDEO: Carl Edwards ahead of Coke 600

CONCORD, NC (WCCB Charlotte) — Carl Edwards calls his 2015 Coca Cola 600 victory at Charlotte Motor Speedway his ‘biggest win of his career’.

“It’s a little bit surreal to me to be coming here as the defending champion,” Edwards said.

Edwards gambled on fuel to pick up the Memorial Day race last year–his first win in nearly two years up to that point. The win was his first at Charlotte Motor Speedway, first driving a Toyota and first in his tenure at Joe Gibbs Racing.

“We won the race and all that pressure came off,” Edwards said. “But still, its one of those wins over time that grows.”Edwards is looking even more comfortable in 2016 as he owns two wins, five top fives and eight top 10s. He currently ranks second on the Chase Grid behind teammate Kyle Busch.

Edwards will be looking to join just a handful of drivers who have won the race in consecutive years. Darrell Waltrip (1978-79, 1988-89), Neil Bonnett (1982-83), Dale Earnhardt (1992-93) and Jeff Gordon (1997-98). Jimmie Johnson won the event three consecutive times from 2003-05.
