Cornelius Residents Upset About Heavy Beach Traffic
CORNELIUS, NC– “Here’s another wrong turn.” said Cornelius resident Lee Fleming.
Fleming watches frustrated as people turn down his street looking for parking. He and his neighbors say it’s been like this all weekend.
“The volume of people coming and going. The traffic.” said Fleming.
As hundreds of families enjoy the holiday soaking up the sun and playing in the water at Ramsey Creek Park, Fleming says neighbors are already weary of the crowds attracted to the new beach just down the road.
“They come in, they turn around, they come in, they try to find any place they can park.” said John Condon.
Condon says the beach shouldn’t have opened until there was a better traffic plan, and more parking. The beach has space for 500 people but only about 130 parking spots.
“The poor police can’t control everything that’s going on.” said Condon.
Many people who want to go are forced to park and walk.
And with no parking signs posted everywhere.. Many told us they parked over half a mile away.
“Yeah, because some people are complaining and they say they are going to tow our cars.” said North Charlotte resident Oscar Martinez.
Neighbors say that’s not only an inconvenience, but a safety issue.
John Condon says, “Not an good thing. Somebody’s gonna get hurt.”
“As much as we want people to come and enjoy the park, this has to be regulated to a degree.” says Fleming.
