Crews Suspend Search for Missing Swimmer on Lake Norman

MOORESVILLE, NC – The search for a swimmer who disappeared in Lake Norman was suspended Sunday night.

Officials say search and recovery efforts will pick back up Monday morning.

Crews spent hours using sonar to search what they say is murky water around a couple of small islands.

They are basing their operations on Charter Place off Brawley School Road.

Officials say three people jumped off a boat to go swimming, while one person stayed aboard.

A strong current and high winds caused the boat to float away, and one of the swimmers, described as a 29-year-old man, couldn’t make it back.

“(He) subsequently went under the water. And witnesses stated that they tried to get to him. They just weren’t able to get to him in time. He went under the water,” says Officer Scott Strickland, with the NC Wildlife Commission.

Officials have not released the missing swimmer’s name.
