Greenpeace Protests Duke Energy With Monopoly Display
CHARLOTTE, NC– Uptown Charlotte looked more like the Monopoly Board this afternoon. It was part of an elaborate protest outside the Duke Energy building.
Greenpeace says State Regulators are taking it easy on Duke Energy. Earlier this month, the Department of Environmental gave Duke Energy until 2024 to drain and dig all the State’s coal ash ponds.
But regulators agreed revisit the issue in 18-months..
“We are here to draw attention to the fact that Duke keeps on evading coal ash clean up.” said Greenpeace Organizer Hanna Mitchell.
Duke Energy Spokesperson Erin Culbert said “Its important that we use all the available data and customize a solution that fits each particular ash basin because they are all different.”
Duke Energy could potentially convince State Regulators to let them cap some of the State’s coal ash ponds, instead of digging them up.
