Victim Identified in Southwest Charlotte Accident

CHARLOTTE, N.C — Police have identified the passenger killed in a southwest Charlotte accident.

Police say 22-year-old Luis Gomez-Espino was driving the van when he ran off the road, overcorrected, and went into oncoming traffic. Gomez-Espino hit 53-year-old Raymond Lipscomb before rolling the van and ejecting his passenger.

The passenger was pronounced dead at the scene by Medic. Investigators say the passenger wasn’t wearing a seat belt at the time of the accident.

Lipscomb was taken to CMC and is said to be in critical condition.

Gomez-Espino was also taken to CMC for treatment and then released. After release, he was arrested and charged with Misdemeanor Death by Motor Vehicle and No Operators License.

The deceased passenger has been identified as 17-year-old Alexis Arciga. His family has been notified of his death.

Police say drugs, alcohol, and speeding are not believed to have been factors in the crash. The investigation is still ongoing.
