However, you should always be somewhat prepared, because storms sometimes take unexpected turns and you don’t want to get caught empty handed. - Route – Make sure to plan out your escape route on a paper map before you leave. Keep in mind that if you’re leaving during evacuation roads maybe closed. Having a paper map will allow you to maneuver and know where you are. Chances are that once the storm hit, you won’t have service to use technology.
- Documents – Gather all of your important documents to bring with you! Identification, passport, social security, insurance, and more! Don’t run the risk of losing your documents in the storm by leaving it behind.
- Essentials – When packing, gather you essentials! Such as prescription meds, emergency kit, food, water, pet’s essentials, and more. Anything that you may need on a daily basis.
- Gas – Fill up your tank as soon as possible! Everyone will be tanking up and you want to make sure you have enough gas to evacuate. Believe it or not, during a storm gas does run out!

- Shelter – Park your car in a covered area is possible, such as a garage or carport. If you can’t park your car in an enclosed area, cover it with tarp. It won’t keep your car fully protected, but it does avoid scratches! You should also place tape on the inside windows. If there are damages to your car, it’ll be easier to clean.
- Insurance – Make sure to contact your insurance provider before the storm hits. Find out with your covered for hurricane damages and what preventative measurements you need to take. This way you won’t have to worry about post the storm.
- Valuables – If you have any documents or important belongings in your car, make sure to take it out! Store them in a safe place during the storm.
