Ceremony Planned for Charlotte Philanthropist Killed During Cross-Country Bicycle Tour

ROCK HILL, S.C. — On Saturday, June 11th, Winthrop University will hold a ceremony to celebrate the life of cyclist Janiva Willis.

WCCB, Charlotte’s CW will live stream the ceremony at 9am.  You can watch it HERE.

Both former teammates, as well as, Winthrop co-head coach Mark Cooke will speak a Dina’s Place in the DiGiorgio Center on Winthrop’s campus. The guest speakers will be followed by prayers and a moment of silence.

Willis, along with fellow cyclist Jeffery Turner, were tragically killed in a car accident after their car collided with a tractor-trailer in back on April 12th in Texas.

Both Willis and Turner were attempting to make a 78-day cross-country bike ride from San Diego, California to Charlotte, North Carolina.

The journey was all part of The Dream Challenge Tour, which was set up by Willis as a way to raise funds and awareness to the importance of mentoring children from challenging backgrounds.

The final leg of The Dream Challenge Tour will be completed by family and friends of Willis and Turner on Saturday following the celebration of life at Winthrop University.

Bikers will travel 27 miles from Rock Hill to Independence Park in Charlotte.
