Panthers: Rivera Contract Extended thru 2018 Season

CHARLOTTE, NC (WCCB Charlotte) — The Panthers have rewarded their coach who took the franchise to its second Super Bowl.

As first reported by Joe Person of the Charlotte Observer, Carolina extends head coach Ron Rivera’s contract to keep him in town through the 2018 season. NFL.Com says that Rivera will now make $19.5 million over the next three seasons which would make him one of the top ten highest-paid head coaches in the league.

The report says Panthers assistant coaches have also received raises.

“It was an easy decision,” Panthers general manager Dave Gettleman said in a statement from the team. “Ron has worked extremely hard and we are thrilled with our current direction. Mr. Richardson has established a great culture here and Ron is a big part of that.”

This is Rivera’s second extension with Carolina. In five seasons with the Panthers, Rivera has a record of 47-32-1 and has taken the team to heights never seen before as Carolina claimed its third straight NFC South title this past season.
