SBI Investigating Fatal Deputy Involved Shooting In Cleveland Co.
SHELBY, NC — The SBI is investigating after a man was fatally shot by a deputy in Cleveland County Tuesday evening.
Deputies say they were called to assist EMS with a psychiatric person on E. Stage Coach Trail Tuesday who was threatening to harm himself. The caller told 911 that her brother was in the yard with his mother telling everyone goodbye.
When Deputy Scott Trammel arrived he found Pedro Cruz-Amado sitting on the porch. As Deputy Trammel approached the porch, Cruz-Amado charged and hit Trammel with a metal chair, according to investigators. Deputies say as Trammel retreated he was hit again in the head.
Investigators say Deputy Trammel was forced to use deadly force to stop Cruz-Amado from attacking further.
The SBI is investigating the incident and Deputy Trammel has been placed on paid administrative leave. Both are standard procedure.
Cleveland County Sheriff Alan Norman issued the following statement:
“A preliminary review shows that Deputy Trammel did not violate any policies or procedures. It is sad that an individual had to lose a life. I would ask the public to keep Deputy Trammel and his family along with the family of Mr. Crus-Amado in their thoughts and prayers.”
