Locals React To Supreme Court Ruling
CHARLOTTE, NC– The ruling was a devastating blow to local immigrants families and their advocates. Meanwhile Republican leaders say it was the right ruling and a message to President Obama.
“Dignity that’s what this would have offered,” said Mayra Artega with the Latin American Coalition.
Myra Artega works with immigrant families at Latin American Coalition and says the Supreme Court’s 4-4 split is beyond disappointing.
“Obviously we are upset by it, this is not definitely the decision that we wanted out of this we’re hoping we could have relief for our families,” said Artega.
President Obama’s executive order offered protection from deportation for millions of undocumented parents who have U.S citizen children.
“It’s very stressful to have children that lost their parents loving parents due to a broken system,” said Artega.
Congressman Robert Pittenger says he’s pleased with the Supreme Court split making President Obama’s order void, and he says it’s the president’s ruling that’s broken.
“Hopefully the President is learning he can’t rule by executive order, that he can’t rule as someone who wants to tell the American people what he wants to do,” said Congressman Pittenger.
Pittenger says he’s not against immigrants, just those who came here illegally, and Congress need to address those 12 million people here already.
“People come from all around the world and I applaud those who want to come to this county it’s a country of immigrants I go to the courthouse I speak in their behalf I applaud those who are naturalized,” said Pittenger.
Artega says it doesn’t change the fact that loving parents are already here and shouldn’t be separated from their children.
“We’re keeping strong we believe the community will come together and will come through with lots of strengths out of this,” said Artega.
