RALIEGH, N.C. β The North Carolina Senate took action Friday to answer calls from Gov. Pat McCrory and the 35,000 members of the stateβs largest business advocacy organization to restore and clarify the right to sue in state court for discrimination.
This addresses one of the chief concerns with the stateβs response to the City of Charlotteβs overreaching bathroom ordinance while protecting the commonsense and broadly supported provision prohibiting men from using ladiesβ bathrooms and locker rooms in public schools and public buildings in North Carolina.
βProtecting the safety and privacy of North Carolina families by keeping grown men out of bathrooms, shower facilities and changing rooms with women and young girls has always been our primary objective,β said Senate Leader Phil Berger. βTodayβs action affirms and protects the core mission of the bathroom safety bill while answering the governor’s and business community’s calls.β
The Senate passed a bill to allow North Carolinians to file a discrimination lawsuit in state court within one year of an alleged offense.
This period is twice as long as the federal limit for filing an initial claim and is consistent with statutes of limitation for lawsuits on many claims in state court.
