Extreme Heat Puts A Strain On The Power Grid

CHARLOTTE, NC– The heat wave is expected to put a strain on the electric grid this weekend, but Duke Energy is prepared.

A company spokesman tells Meteorologist Michelle Rotella there should be plenty of power to keep you home cool, since large businesses and industry shut down for the weekend.  In a pinch, Duke can can typically purchase power from other areas, but this weekend, nearly the entire nation will feel the heat.

“This would be one of those situations where all of the neighboring utilities are experiencing really high demand,” said Tim Pettit of Duke Energy.

Running the air conditioner can account for half of your home’s energy use. Duke recommends setting your thermostat at 78. For every degree lower than that, you increase your bill 10-percent.
