CHARLOTTE, N.C. — The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department’s Cold Case Unit has charged a man for his involvement in a murder that occurred on July 4th, 2004.
CMPD charged Anthony Aikens with murder and kidnapping for the death of Mai Cooper.
According to reports, on July 4th, 2004, officers responded in reference to locating the vehicle of a missing female in the area. Police found Cooper deceased in the trunk of the vehicle.
After gathering information, detectives named Anthony Aikens as a person of interest. Cooper was last seen June 23rd, 2004; the day she met Aikens. At the time, police did not have enough evidence after an interview with Aikens in order to make an arrest. Aikens allegedly fled to New York after his interview with police.
On July 21, 2016, while being held in a correctional facility for an unrelated First Degree Manslaughter charge, detectives with the Cold Case Unit traveled to New York to interview Aikens once again. Following the interview, detectives charged Aikens with Murder and Kidnapping.
