(WCCB Charlotte) — A young Carolina Panthers football team will be on display for most of Thursday’s preseason opener at Baltimore. And Ron Rivera wants to make sure his team is well-prepared.
Hence, an angry Rivera who sent a message to the young guys during a ‘two-minute drill’ portion of Monday morning’s practice in Spartanburg.
“We missed a couple alignments early on and moreso from anything else, it really bothered me,” Rivera said. “And it was mostly the young guys and that’s not good enough. You are not going to know where to line up and you are going to get the crapped kicked out of you.”
“I wasn’t going to have it.”
It was also a kick in the rear to the veterans to pick their tempo up. Rivera was not pleased with the energy of practice–especially coming off a Sunday practice where the team toned it down and went through the day in just helmets and shoulder pads.

Rivera will limit the number of snaps for many of the starters going into Thursday’s first preseason game at Baltimore. Rivera said on Sunday that wide receiver Kelvin Benjamin would be in the game and said his MVP quarterback, Cam Newton, will get time but hopefully not too much work.
“If you see us have a real nice series to begin with, who knows,” Rivera said about how long Newton will stay in Thursday’s contest.
Defensive end Rakim Cox tested out his ailing back on Monday and it ‘tightened up’ again according to Rivera. The news about DT Chas Alexcih’s ‘significant knee injury’ does not appear to be good as the team will work out potential replacements in the coming days.
