Suspected Impaired Driver Now Charged with Murder

CHARLOTTE — A suspected impaired driver involved in a deadly crash on South Tryon Street earlier this month has now been charged with murder.

Kelly Ann ConkinCharlotte-Mecklenburg Police say Kelly Ann Conkin was discharged from the hospital Monday and  was served with arrest warrants second degree murder, felony death by motor vehicle, felony serious injury by motor vehicle, reckless driving and possession of marijuana.

On August 20 around 2 a.m., police say Conkin was driving on north on South Tryon Street near Moss Road. She struck a curb on the right, lost control and veered left through the median, and headon into a Toyota Camry carrying four women.

Conkin was transported to Carolinas Medical Center (CMC) with non-life threatening injuries.  The driver of the Toyota Camry, Farshad Hosseini, and rear passenger, Cecelia Buitiago De Gonzalez, were both transported to CMC with serious injuries.  Front seat passenger, Sonia Rocio Gonzalez, and rear passenger, Shophia Hosseini, were transported to CMC with minor injuries.

Cecelia De Gonzalez, 79, was later pronounced deceased at 3:13 a.m. at CMC from the injuries she sustained in the collision.

She is scheduled to face a judge Tuesday afternoon.  Conkin also has a 2013 DWI charge, according to sheriff’s records.
