Troopers Provide Update In Double Fatal Accident That Shut Down I-77
CHESTER, S.C. — Two people were killed in an accident on I-77 near Chester Thursday. Investigators say six total vehicles were involved in the wreck that happened near mile marker 68 in Chester County.
All the drivers were driving at a slow speed due to congestion in the area when a tractor-trailer traveling in the northbound lane rear-ended a vehicle, causing a chain reaction, according to a news release. The tractor-trailer that rear-ended the vehicle ended up crossing over into the southbound lane and collided with another tractor-trailer causing a fire.
The driver of the tractor-trailer that first rear-ended a vehicle is deceased. The Chester County coroner has identified the driver of the tractor-trailer as 59-year-old Norman Kimble of Pennsylvania.
A passenger in a vehicle involved in the chain reaction was also killed. That person was 82-years-old but officials have not released a name.
Troopers say a toddler was also ejected from one of the vehicles and was flown to a hospital for treatment.
