Choking Game Deadly For 11 Year Old Boy
CHARLOTTE, NC– “It’s completely deadly you’re playing with something that’s one of the most basic ways we live is the ability to breathe,” said Licensed Psychotherapist, Jonathan Hetterly.
The choking game had deadly results for Indian Land 11 year old Garrett Pope Junior. His father posted on Facebook that his son took the game too far. Psychotherapist Jonathan Hetterly says the game isn’t new.
“I think the difference is the advent of social media and even things like you tube has brought greater awareness not so much to adults but actually to kids, adolescents and teens,” said Hetterly.
The Pope’s have been vocal over Facebook telling parents to talk to their children. Hetterly is also a father of 10 and 13 year old girls, he says one knew about the “game”, one didn’t.
“This is an opportunity as tragic as it is for parents to step back and have conversations with their kids what they do know about this what they’ve heard about it,” said Hetterly.
Hetterly says it’s important to have ongoing talks, so your kids feel comfortable coming to you.
“Parents well intentioned often times they dominate the conversation and they don’t just sometimes shut up and let their kids talk to them and let their kids process,” said Hetterly.
Hetterly says for parents not to assume their kids won’t be curious.
“By all accounts he was a great kid, well liked, came from great family, very active had a lot of interests,” said Hetterly.
Hetterly reminds everyone to respect the Pope family in their time of grief and show sensitivity to what you post on social media.
The Garrett family has set up a memorial fund to support one of Garrett’s favorite pastimes; reading.
