York County Sprays for Mosquitoes after Second Zika Case
YORK COUNTY, SC — York County officials sprayed for mosquitoes in the Hickory Grove community Tuesday after a second travel-related Zika case was confirmed.
Officials would not say exactly where they sprayed because of “patient confidentiality,” but told WCCB that they used the insecticide Mavrik Perimeter, said not to be harmful to honey bees or animals.
County officials are working with the state, and say the best way to prevent spread of Zika and other mosquito-borne viruses is to eliminate their breeding grounds. Monday night, SCDHEC along with York County Emergency Management visited residences in the Hickory Grove targeted area to notify them about the spraying and answer any questions.
This is the second time York County has sprayed for mosquitoes using backpack blowers. In July, officials sprayed an area of Tega Cay after a case of travel-related Zika was confirmed there.
