Rutherford County Deputy Sheriff Shot While On Duty
RUTHERFORDTON, N.C. – Officials with the Rutherfordton Police Department say they were dispatched to a possible suicidal person with a gun at 7:53 am on Saturday morning.
Officers from North Carolina State Highway Patrol, Rutherford County Sheriff Office, N.C. and Spindale Police Department responded to assist.
Police say when they responded to the residence on 166 Monfredo Street, the resident fired his weapon.
Officials say Rutherfordton Police Officers and Sheriff’s Deputies then returned the fire.
Officials say that Rutherford County Deputy Sheriff Patrick Wiseman was struck during the exchange of gunfire.
Wiseman was transported to a local trauma center with non-life threatening injuries.
Officials say early reports indicate that Wiseman is in stable condition.
Police say that the resident was struck by gunfire and died at the scene.
The incident has been turned over to the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation.
