SC Residents Board Up And Head Out Ahead Of Hurricane Matthew
SULLIVAN’S ISLAND, SC– “I lived here pre Hugo so I know to get the heck out of dodge,” said Mary English of Sullivan’s Island, SC.
The last of the locals waiting to evacuate Sullivan’s Island closed down the last business open, Dunleaveys Pub.
“I just wanted to be open for the Island residents the people that wanted to come out and not be stuck in their houses cause they’re going to be stuck for next couple days so we decided we were going to stay open as long as we could,” said Jamie Maher of Dunleavey’s Pub.
Most other businesses including Gas stations and from across Charleston to Folly Beach boarded up early to heed Governor Haleys evacuation order.
“I’ll probably evacuate late late tonight when the traffic isn’t as bad.”
One place that was packed all day, The Lowes in Mount Pleasant. They sold out of tarps, chainsaws and the last bit of plywood people bought for their homes and elderly loved ones.
“He’s 85 he went through Hurricane Hugo, the water came in lifted his house off the foundation and the water came in so deep it floated his refrigerator out of the kitchen into the living room,” said Mount Pleasant resident, Gary Early.
Locals say their homes are boarded up but they aren’t taking chance on their lives.
“All that’s stuff can be replaced but you gotta live you gotta do what Governor Haley said to do get the heck out of here,” said Carlson Huey.
