Accident Claims The Life Of One Twin In Burke County

BURKE COUNTY, NC — Officials are investigating after a fatal accident involving two Draughn High School students happened early Friday morning.

Investigators say the accident happened just after 5am on Enola Road near Watershed Road. 17-year-old twin sisters Mackenzie and Meleah Carswell were going to a morning meeting for the Anchor Club at Draughn High when Meleah ran off the road, overcorrected, and then went down an embankment and struck a tree.

Officials say Meleah suffered non-life threatening injuries, but her sister Mackenzie was killed in the accident.

According to reports, wet roads may have contributed to the accident, but it is not yet known if speed was a factor.
