Burr, Ross Square Off In Senate Debate

CHARLOTTE, NC– “Deborah Ross opposed the North Carolina sexual offender registry, she wants to protect sexual predators over victims,” said a Richard Burr ad.

“You took millions from special interest, then cashed in, voted to cut your own taxes and raise them on working folks,” said a Deborah Ross ad.

The ads air often and hit hard. UNC Charlotte political science professor Eric Heberlig says many are paid for by the national parties because of how close the race is… and how North Carolina could shift Senate control.

“There’s a lot of interest in who wins North Carolina and a lot of the big money that’s trying to affect who controls the Senate in Washington is trying to influence North Carolina voters,” said Heberlig.

Incumbent Richard Burr and opponent Deborah Ross were both asked their position on House Bill Two.

“The Charlotte City council tried to find a solution to a problem that didn’t exist,” said Burr.

“I’ve been opposed to HB2 since beginning because it discriminates it is a federal issue and it’s hurt our economy and good name,” said Ross.

Heberlig says the presidential race will largely determine who wins the Senate as well.

When asked both candidates supported their nominee but separated themselves as well.

“I think if in fact he did it that would be sexual assault I take him at his word he said he didn’t do it,” said Burr.

“It’s been on the record that I believe the way Hillary handled her emails was inappropriate she has said so,” said Ross.
