CMPD Releases 911 Calls, Name Of Officer And Armed Subject Involved In Shooting At Charlotte Hotel

UPDATE:  CMPD has released the name of the officer and suspect involved in a shooting at the Days Inn on East Woodlawn Road Wednesday morning.

Investigators say Officer Francine Delano shot, 31-year-old, Alonzo Edwin Castro after responding to a 911 call regarding a possible armed robbery with shots fired.

Officer Delano has been placed on paid Administrative Leave.  Officer Delano has been employed with the CMPD since January 23, 2006, and is currently assigned to the Westover Division.

A witness reported seeing a robbery in an alley, and stated Castro pulled out a gun and another man, Isidro Albarran, fired several shots as the victim was leaving the area.

According to reports, Officer Delano was in the area and immediately responded upon hearing the gun shots.

Officer Delano saw two men, identified as Alonzo Castro and Isidro Albarran, in an alley as she exited her vehicle.  Officer Delano perceived an imminent threat and fired her weapon striking Castro in the leg.

Officers rendered aid to Castro before he was transported by medic to Carolinas Medical Center, where he was treated and released.  Castro was then transported  to police headquarters and interviewed by detectives.  Following the interview, Castro was charged with two counts of Assault with a Deadly Weapon, Possession of a Firearm by a Convicted Felon, and Attempted Robbery with A Dangerous Weapon.

Isidro Albarran, 38, voluntarily came to police headquarters and spoke with detectives.  At the conclusion of his interview, Albarran was charged by Homicide detectives with Discharging a Firearm within the City Limits.

The investigation is ongoing, and CMPD public affairs will release further information will as it develops.


CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A CMPD officer is on paid-administrative leave after shooting an armed man in the leg at a Charlotte hotel early Wednesday morning, according to investigators.

Police say the officer heard multiple gunshots coming from the parking lot of the Days Inn on East Woodlawn Road just before 2am.  Investigators say when the officer pulled into the parking lot and exited her vehicle she immediately encountered an individual who was armed with a handgun.

The officer reportedly perceived that this armed man was an imminent deadly threat at which time she fired her service weapon, striking the man in the leg.

Additional officers arrived on the scene and immediately provided medical assistance to the man, including applying a tourniquet.  The man was taken to a local hospital with non-life threatening injuries.  The officer was not injured.

The firearm that the man was reportedly carrying was recovered at the scene, according to a news release.

The names of the officer and the man who was shot will be released at a later time.
