Are you planning some fear-filled festivities for Halloween night? If you’re heading out with a group of little monsters to collect candy, then you definitely need to brush up on safety – pedestrian safety, to be exact. Luckily, Toyota of N Charlotte is here to help you do just that! We’ve gathered our best safety tips for hitting the sidewalks, and we even have a few Halloween safety tips to share to round it all out. Let’s get started!
Tip #1: Choose costumes carefully. You don’t want your little witches and werewolves to be tripping over too-long hems or complaining that their shoes hurt their feet halfway into the route. Additionally, try to use face paint instead of masks whenever possible. Masks can actually obstruct vision and aren’t the safest bet!

Tip #2: Stay on the sidewalks. Our N Charlotte Toyota dealership recommends planning your route ahead of time so you can ensure there’s safe sidewalk space to walk and that the way is well-lit by street lights. Try to avoid walking on the shoulder of the road or the road at all costs, as Halloween night is a busy night for traffic and there are often drunk drivers out. And encourage everyone to stay with the group – no one should be walking alone!
Tip #3: Remember to teach trick-or-treaters the basic pedestrian safety rules laid out by our N Charlotte Toyota dealership. These include:
- Crossing only at crosswalks, stop signs, and stop lights – no jaywalking!
- Looking left, right, and left again before crossing to ensure the way is actually clear.
- Obeying traffic signals when they come into play.
- Never crossing from behind parked cars, which can block oncoming traffic from view.
- Avoid using headphones or playing on phones and keep your full attention on the task at hand.
Tip #4: Increase visibility. If you can, try to incorporate light-colored fabrics into your kids’ costumes so they’re easier to see. If their costumes require darker hues, use reflective tape on clothes and bags to enhance visibility. Toyota of N Charlotte also recommends that you have each kid carry a flashlight or glowstick to up their visibility factor to drivers when it’s dark out!

Tip #5: Check candy before they eat it. This may seem like a common sense type of thing, but it’s important! If your little monsters are eager to get their paws on some sugar during trick-or-treating, bring a bag of your own candy that they can dig into so you can thoroughly check their treats when you get home. (And hey, this gives you a chance to scope the candy and take some of your favorites before it all disappears!)
