Voluntary Water Restrictions Expected Soon in Mecklenburg County
MATTHEWS, NC – Charlotte and Mecklenburg County could be under voluntary water restrictions as soon as Tuesday, because of the dry conditions recently.
Charlotte Water anticipates we will reach drought stage one in Mecklenburg County
on November 1st.
That means voluntary restrictions will be in place on how you use water around your home.
When they go into effect, you’ll be asked to only water your lawn on Tuesdays and Saturdays, to not use decorative fountains, and to not wash your car at home.
Yard work kept Kris Madden busy outside his home in Matthews Monday night.
He and his mom have noticed the dry conditions but didn’t realize we’re this close to a drought.
“You know the weather’s unpredictable. We have no control over that. So it is what it is,” says Sherri Madden.
Rght now, Mecklenburg and Iredell counties are still just considered abnormally dry. But we’re already seeing a moderate drought in Alexander, Avery, Burke, Caldwell, Catawba, Gaston, Lincoln, and Watagua counties.
Cleveland County is under a severe drought.
Teri Wilkinson with Pike Nursery in Matthews says restrictions could have an effect on grass already starting to turn brown.
“I see a lot of dust flying when people are mowing so it’s definitely affected the lawns in the past month,” she says.
