Last Minute Push Underway to Sway Undecided Voters

CHARLOTTE, NC – Undecided voters could be the key to who wins in North Carolina Tuesday.
From the top of the ticket down to state and local races, both sides spent Monday night making final pushes.

Close to 300,000 voted early in Mecklenburg County, so Election Director Michael Dickerson only expects around 165,000 more on Tuesday.

“I’ve got some precincts that have already voted 65, 75 percent of who we expect are gonna show up,” Dickerson says.

In Mecklenburg County, most early voters were Democrats, followed by those who are unaffiliated, and Republicans coming in third.

“I think that’s going to be key to this election, is how those unaffiliated voters are breaking,” Dickerson says.

Both sides aren’t taking any chances, holding last-minute phone banks to reach potential voters.

U.S. Senate candidate Deborah Ross met supporters at a phone bank at the Music Factory. She’s locked in a tight race with incumbent Senator Richard Burr.

“We have to fight from the top of ticket, on down to make sure that our power is felt,” says Marty Rouse, with Human Rights Campaign.

It’s also a close race between Governor Pat McCrory and Democrat Attorney General Roy Cooper.

At Mecklenburg County Republican Headquarters, organizers say they’re confident their supporters will show up.

“It’s the one thing the polls are missing. The enthusiasm for this election is amazing,” says Claire Mahoney, with the Mecklenburg County Republican Party.
