CMS Board Passes Phase One of Student Assignment Plan
CHARLOTTE, NC – The Charlotte-Mecklenburg School Board approved the first phase of its controversial new student assignment plan Wednesday night.
The plan gives magnet school priority to students from low-income families. Second is students who attend low-performing schools. That’s followed by students living near the magnet school. And last priority is for those outside the transportation zone.
Supporters say the changes will offer more diversity and give opportunities to students who are struggling.
They say it would also help the district compete against charter and private schools.
Opponents say the plan is too expensive and would lead to more parents taking their kids out of CMS.
Some also want to wait to make sure Superintendent Ann Clark’s replacement is on board with the changes.
