CHARLOTTE, NC — After a long and hard fought battle, Republican presidential candidate Donald J. Trump will now become the 45th president of the United States of America, according to the Associated Press.
Donald Trump and vice-presidential running mate Mike Pence defeated Hillary Clinton and her VP running mate Tim Kaine Tuesday. Trump was considered an underdog throughout the election as polls showed him trailing Clinton by as much as 13 points at times.
Trump’s Brexit style victory marks an end to one of the most divisive and heated battles for the U.S. presidency in history. Throughout the campaign, Trump and Clinton exchanged blows over political, personal, and ethical histories. Clinton’s campaign was tarnished by multiple FBI investigations and scandals regarding emails, the Clinton Foundation, and even her husband, former President Bill Clinton’s, scandals throughout his time in and out of office.
Trump also faced many uphill battles throughout his campaign. Trump, who came into the race with no political experience, billed himself as the political outsider who would upend the political establishments and put an end to government corruption. His off the cuff style and politically incorrect comments had many fearing he would be to divisive to ever effectively serve as president. Trump faced accusations of sexual assault, discrimination, and even support of Russian entities that many believed were responsible for the hacks on DNC and Clinton campaign emails and servers.
In the end, the billionaire businessman did it. Donald Trump rallied supporters from all walks of life and from every part of the country. After an election night that only a select few would have predicted, the Republican presidential nominee now becomes President-Elect Donald J. Trump.
