Race For North Carolina Governor Still Not Official
CHARLOTTE, NC– “Because of your hard work we have won this race for governor of North Carolina,” said Roy Cooper.
Democratic gubernatorial candidate Roy Cooper declared victory around 1:00 AM Wednesday. Not so fast says Governor Pat McCrory who did not concede.
“The process is continuing right here in North Carolina, the election is not over in North Carolina,” said Governor Pat McCrory.
There are still thousands of provisional and absentee votes yet to be counted statewide. Mecklenburg County Elections Director Michael Dickerson says they have an estimated 3600 provisional ballots, historically he says only about 50 % count.
” We have to review make sure they’re registered make sure they’re qualified for a vote if they do great if not I can’t count them,” said Dickerson.
Which is why UNC Charlotte Political Science Professor Eric Heberlig says Governor McCrory will not concede until all are counted.
“Typically these recounts and provisional ballots there aren’t enough of them to make difference in the outcome of the race but given how close it is and number of provisionals apparently out there conceivably this could make a difference,” said Heberlig.
What is confirmed,,, McCrory lost counties with cities impacted by loss of business due to House Bill Two.
“You see Mecklenburg, Forsyth, Guilford and Durham,” said Dickerson.
Even Wake County.
Within Mecklenburg Cooper won several historically Republican precincts near the lake where the I-77 toll lanes have been protested.
“The precincts here Cornelius, Davidson,” said Dickerson.
