CHARLOTTE, NC — A jury delivered a guilty verdict Monday on Damien Pruitt for the 2014 rape of a UNCC student in her dorm room.
Officials with the Mecklenburg County District Attorney’s Office say Pruitt, 24, was found guilty of two counts of second-degree sexual offense Monday. Pruitt’s trial started on November 14th and ended today when the jury returned their guilty verdict. The judge sentenced Pruitt to at least six years in prison.
Pruitt was 21-years-old when police arrested him after a UNCC student said that she was sexually assaulted inside of her dorm room back in January 2014. The victim told detectives that the suspect, later identified as Pruitt, entered her room in Pine Hall early one morning and then sexually assaulted her.
Police said the victim’s suitemate had let Pruitt into the dorm. Pruitt then left that person to go to the restroom, and gained access into the victim’s room.
The victim, immediately reported the assault and went to the hospital.
Pruitt was not an employee or student of UNCC at the time of the assault.
