Suspect in Ohio State University Attack is 18-Year-Old Student of Somalian Decent
(CNN) — Ten people have been hospitalized following an attack on Ohio State University’s campus.Β Columbus Fire spokeswoman Rebecca Diehm stated that nine are in stable condition, and one is in critical condition.
Federal law enforcement states that the suspect was a 18-year-old Ohio State student Abdul Razak Ali Artan. Officials say he is of Somalian decent. HeΒ was a legal resident in the area and authorities are currently looking to determine theΒ motive.
The university released a statement after the attack.
The Suspect in the attack reportedly ran into pedestrians with his car before using a weapon to cut several people, OSU President Dr. Michael Drake said. CNN reports that the suspect used a butchers knife, according to OSU Police Chief Craig Stone.
Students were alerted by the University early Monday morning.
Sophomore Wyatt Crosher said he heard gunfire that he believes came from a class building across the street.
“My roommate and I heard about three or four gunshots from across the street, and soon after we heard a bunch of police and ambulances pull up across the street,” the 19-year-old said.
“We can’t see the building where the shooting happened because of a dorm blocking our view. It truly sounded like gunshots, and really soon after we heard a bunch of sirens. We can see the police cars from our dorm.”
Federal law enforcementΒ now suggests that the gunshots heard by students were that of the officer attempting to stop the suspect.
