CHARLOTTE, NC — The Charlotte City Council voted 8-2 Monday in favor of moving forward with Phase 2 of the CityLYNX Gold Line Streetcar project.
Phase 2 will include a 2.5 mile extension of the current line heading west toward Johnson C. Smith University. The contract totaling $94 million was awarded to the Johnson Bros. Corporation of Roanoke, Texas and will include the Phase 2 construction as well as associated city improvements.
The City Council also approved the purchase of six new hybrid streetcars and spare parts for up to $40 million. The new cars will include on-board batteries that will allow them to operate off-wire from the CTC/Arena Stop to the Tryon Street Stop. These cars will also replace the existing Phase 1 streetcars.
Officials say the CityLYNX Phase 2 project is an integral part of the Metropolitan Transit Commission’s adopted 2030 Transit Corridor System Plan that will link rail and bus service in the Central Business District.
Phase 2 is expected to be complete by Fall 2020.
