General Assembly Files Dozens Of Bills At Special Second Session
CHARLOTTE, NC– “This is a grotesque overreach of power, these folks are all about power they don’t care what the public thinks,” said Republican North Carolina State Senator, Jeff Jackson.
Democratic Senator Jeff Jackson says it was a whirlwind second special session this week at the General Assembly. Republicans filed some two dozen bills to be voted on Thursday.
“They affect the environment they affect business operations they do a lot to toll back the power of the new governor, Governor Cooper,” said Jackson.
Republican Senator Jeff Tarte says all 170 legislators have the right to file anything but he’s guessing a majority never reaches a vote.
“I don’t know what all has been filed but I have not read a bill that does any of that yet,” said Democratic North Carolina State Senator, Jeff Tarte.
Senator Jackson says it was a clear attempt to cut Governor-elect Roy Cooper’s power.
“There’s legislation that affects the Governor’s ability to make appointments to organizations like the board of elections, the Board of Trustees and makes his cabinet appointments subject to the approval of the General Assembly,” said Jackson.
Senator Tarte dismisses the accusations of them targeting Cooper but says cabinet appointment approval is an interesting concept done in Congress.
“It’s really hard to comment on you know, hypothetical or stuff different people have filed and exactly what it does or doesn’t do,” said Tarte.
But Jackson says it’s clear to him and democrats what republicans are trying to do.
“They never would have filed this legislation if McCrory had won re-election this is clearly a power grab,” said Jackson.
