Suspected Shoplifter Carjacks Two Women in Walmart Parking Lot
INDIAN TRAIL, NC – Union County Deputies say they are looking for four suspects involved in a shoplifting ring that led to a carjacking late Friday night.
Surveillance photos show the suspects boldly walking out of the Walmart in Indian Trail, pushing carts carrying thousands of dollars worth of items.
“Well, it’s very bold and brazen. I mean, there was very little effort of these individuals to disguise themselves,” explains Tony Underwood, with the Union County Sheriff’s Office.
Underwood says the suspects ended up being too greedy.
“They were able to load as much merchandise as they could in the vehicles they brought to Walmart and apparently had too much merchandise and not enough room to carry it,” Underwood explains.
Around 11:45pm, Deputies say one of the suspected shoplifters carjacked two young women sitting in a running BMW.
One of the victims was able to escape, but the suspect drove off with the other.
“She was trying, I think to find her glasses, so he actually drove away with her and turned around and actually assaulted her in the vehicle,” Underwood says.
She eventually escaped too.
Police later found the stolen BMW in Charlotte where it was involved in a hit and run accident near I-85 and Freedom Drive.
The carjacking suspect ran off on foot. No arrests have been made.
