Increased Rainfall Causes Stormwater Runoff From Coal Ash Site

MOORESBORO, NC — Duke Energy officials say that recent sustained rainfalls have caused stormwater from the coal ash landfill at Rogers Energy Complex to runoff into a nearby creek.

The runoff was discovered during a routine inspection early Tuesday morning, according to reports. Officials say they estimate around 1,000 gallons of stormwater from the landfill area reached the creek.

Duke Energy says the runoff was stopped and steps have been taken to prevent the runoff from happening again. Officials say NC Department of Environmental Quality were notified, and there have been no signs of impact to the creek or Broad River.
