Red Cross Seeks Donors As Winter Weather Causes Severe Blood Shortage

CHARLOTTE, NC — The American Red Cross says they are urging eligible donors to give blood and platelets after several rounds of severe weather has caused a shortage throughout the country.

According to a release, around 300 blood drives in 27 states have been forced to cancel due to winter weather. As a result, officials say more than 10,500 blood and platelet donations will go uncollected.

Hospital patients in need of transfusions continue to pile up regardless of weather conditions. That is why officials need donors to help restock the shelves and overcome the shortage.

To make an appointment to give blood, download the Red Cross Blood Donor App, visit RedCrossBlood.org or call 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767). Donors are encouraged to make appointments and complete the RapidPass online health history questionnaire at RedCrossBlood.org/RapidPass to save time when donating.
